It’s hard to believe that a year has gone by since we launched the first issue of The Arch magazine. So yes, we’ve just released our birthday issue and it’s all about celebration.

To mark the occasion we sent out a call to all designers, illustrators and photographers inviting them to make their mark on The Arch by designing a cover.

We received several inspired entries some of which take our first birthday into account, and others of which merely focus on spring. The design which stands head and shoulders above the rest though is by Simone Rossum and Jono Garrett of Black River Future Classics. It combines spring, our first birthday and the classic, elegance of The Arch magazine and all it represents. “Spring is woven into the design of the number 1, so as not to draw attention, but rather draw subtle nuances to a time of year celebrated for new beginnings,” write Simone and Jono in their accompanying rationale. We couldn’t agree more.

What seals the deal though, is the ingenious and unexpected twist of the completely black cover in spring; it’s pure drama! It’s all about that moment when the theatre lights dim and the audience sits rapt with the thrill of pure, delicious anticipation immediately prior to the flood of stage light which reveals a wonderland bursting with spectacular colour. The spring issue of The Arch is just that. Within the classic black cover lies an abundance of colour, freshness – and like spring’s new buds, emerging and inspiring local talent.

For starters we showcase the designs of our cover competition winners, Simone and Jono and their colleagues at Black River Future Classics. Their clients include Nandos, Vida e Caffé, Mini and Virgin Mobile among others. Click on The Arch Winners link for a peek at their impressive portfolio.
